Annual Fund - One Family at a Time, as Many Families as Possible
“In less than a year our whole world changed… it got so much better!” – Mozella
Remarkably, for Mozella and her son Zayn, the year 2020 was a year of hope, confidence, and joy! Towards the end of 2019, Mozella connected with Karen Mackie a Family Support Provider working for Autism Delaware’s newest program – the Autism Care Team Program (ACT).
Prior to meeting Karen and working with Autism Delaware, Mozella was in a desperate situation. She worried that her 10-year old son might take his life because school was unbearable. She watched him endure bullying, multiple head injuries while in school, and too many disinterested teachers and school administrators. She volunteered at her son’s school on a daily basis to protect him, teach his teachers, and monitor how he was being treated.
For years teachers and administrators failed to identify Zayn’s autism or suggest he even be evaluated. Mozella has undergraduate and graduate degrees in engineering, yet did not know then, how to effectively advocate for her son or navigate the many challenges families affected by autism must face. Autism challenges families in every demographic. Similar to many families affected by autism, Zayn and his family had a very difficult journey before they found Autism Delaware. Mozella says she was, “Often angry, frustrated and scared. Then, when we finally did received an autism diagnosis, that’s all we received – just a diagnosis! No help or direction from anyone. We had no idea how to navigate autism. It only made us angrier, more frustrated, and more sacred.” Then Mozella reached out to Autism Delaware.
“Karen’s help was just what our family needed”
Over the course of 9 months, Karen met with Mozella in person and virtually to help her learn how to effectively advocate for Zayn and navigate some of their biggest hurdles. Today, Zayn is 13-years old and thriving. He is attending school and loving it. He swims on the swim team and excels. He currently holds a Purple Belt in Isshin-Ryu Karate. But cooking is Zayne’s real passion. He has been cooking a lot in 2020. Zayn is loving life and his mother could not be happier. Mozella is working on her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership and once again enjoys the comfort of just being Zayn’s mom again. She has since “graduated” from the ACT Program and is now hoping to help other families navigate their journey with autism.
“Now I have hope, he has confidence, we have joy”
The Autism Care Team is one of the many innovative and effective programs provided by Autism Delaware. Nothing can replace the connection made between a new parent and one who has experience, resources and help to offer, and time to just listen and reassure. Our Family Support Providers (FSPs) are parents of children with autism who work one-on-one with families on an ongoing basis to provide an array of services and supports. FSPs and families meet in person or through video chat at least monthly. The FSPs
- coach families on identifying steps to make informed decisions about services.
- help families develop a personalized plan with goals.
- coach families on advocacy and how service systems work in our state.
- share resources and connect families to parent education programs.
If you, or a family you know, are in need of support or guidance along the journey with autism, please contact our office today and ask to speak with an intake coordinator, at (302) 224-6020 ext. 219.
