The Walk for Autism
Due to recent developments tied to the global spread of the coronavirus (COVID19) and the heightened risk for people with intellectual disabilities and the elderly, we are cancelling the Walk for Autism this year – as we know it! However, we are excited to announce the 2020 Virtual Walk for Autism to take place throughout the month of April. As many of you know, the Walk for Autism is our biggest community gathering and celebration each year and helps to raise funds to support our services throughout the state. We do not want to miss out on celebrating our loved ones affected by autism or the generosity of our community. We hope you will all consider joining us to make the Virtual Walk for Autism a huge success and continue the support of our vital services.
Virtual Walk & Social Media
Using social media is a natural fit for a virtual walk!
We encourage all teams and individuals who are celebrating throughout the month to post to Facebook or Twitter. Tag @AutismDelaware in your photos and videos and use the hashtag #VirtualWalkForAutism. We will repost as many of the posts as we can and will then compile everything into videos for both Lewes and Wilmington. You can also send your photos and videos to our events manager at Deanna.Principe@delautism.org

The Virtual Walk For Autism
So, What is the Virtual Walk for Autism?
Instead of coming together in Cape Henlopen State Park or Bellevue State Park to walk together as a community, in the Virtual Walk for Autism teams (or individuals) will walk on their own, in their communities, around their neighborhoods, in their homes or wherever they can. Walk for miles, walk for blocks, walk up and down stairs, or walk in place… we don’t care how you do it. Be creative, have fun, but also please be safe. Walkers will make videos and take pictures of their walk, post them on social media, and send them to Autism Delaware. We will share each independent walk and create one big video of the Virtual Walk for Autism to be shared at the end of April. We encourage teams with family and friends in other cities to expand the Virtual Walk for Autism across the country. Let’s see how many different places this walk can go.
What About the Walk Shirts?
Walk shirts will be available for every person registered for the Walk For Autism. Beginning April 6 through May 8, shirts will be available to be picked up at the Autism Delaware offices in Newark and Lewes by individuals who were registered by March 16, 2020. If you register between March 16 and April 30, we will be ordering a 2nd run of the walk shirts and will inform you when those are ready to pick up. We encourage team captains to pick up all their team’s shirts to minimize the number of people who come through our offices. We will have a few evenings where our offices will be open to accommodate those individuals who cannot pick up during normal business hours. We will let you know those hours when we confirm.
What Do I Do With My Fundraising Envelope?
Please continue to use your envelopes to raise as much money as you can. Beginning Monday April 6 through Friday, May 8, fundraising envelopes may be dropped off at the Autism Delaware offices. We encourage team captains to collect and drop off as many of their team member’s envelopes as possible. We will post a few evening days to accommodate those individuals who cannot drop off during normal business hours.
Online fundraising will continue through the month of April. We encourage teams grow in size and increase their fundraising efforts. The Virtual Walk for Autism could be the most successful fundraising walk ever!
Tell Your Story
There’s no more powerful way to compel someone to give to your walk team or to Autism Delaware than to tell your story.
It’s personal, it’s meaningful, it’s your truth.
Tell us your story and we’ll feature it here on our website and on our social media pages.
