list  How to Write Your Legislator

1.) Address letter as follows:
The Honorable John Doe, State Representative or State Senator.

Dear Rep./Sen. Doe:

2.) Be as brief as possible (no more than one page). Be clear and complete.

3.) State your view in the first paragraph and also tell the legislator who you are and how he/she can contact you.

4.) Explain how the issue you are writing about affects (or will affect) your child or your family. Give facts and examples. Explain your situation. Legislators usually don't know all the issues. Be positive whenever you can. Do not threaten to withdraw your vote if he or she will not support your view. Instead, try again at another time.

5.) Make sure to include your address and telephone number.

6.) Close by asking for a written response. and always....

7.) THANK YOUR LEGISLATOR IF HE/SHE HAS SUPPORTED YOUR ISSUE!
