Message from the Director

We are feeling excited and renewed at Autism Delaware with our new name, a new website, a new office, and a new mandate for advocacy. These are challenging days with economic downturns all around, but they are also days of opportunities to make effective change and to continue to raise awareness about autism and its impact on families, friends and society.

Why did we choose this particular name? The board and staff looked at a variety of names and chose Autism Delaware because it opens the door to all kinds of possibilities. We are very different than we were ten short years ago. Who would have guessed that that group of 10 parents would grow to become one of the major advocates in Delaware, or that we would offer very unique services to adults that range from starting a small business to having a night out at the 76’s. Autism Delaware has a broad mission because we are about building community. The organization will change and grow as our community’s needs changes and grows and we wanted a name that can keep up with the changes.

In the coming year we will be establishing a statewide presence by hiring a staff representative in Southern Delaware who can coordinate our services in Kent and Sussex Counties. We will continue to support family recreational activities and we are adding opportunities for adults to have fun as well.

Education has always been important to Autism Delaware. For the first time we brought two speakers to all three counties so that it would be easier for parents, educators and professionals to attend. We plan to continue in this effort.

In the future we will look for partnerships with local businesses, government and non-profits to continue to expand access to services and supports for our individuals and their families. We invite you to join with us in all our efforts.

Sincerely,
Theda M. Ellis, M.Ed., MBA
